The Heart of the Fox
In the 1800’s during McHenry’s earlier days, the town was used as hunting and fishing grounds for the Potawatomie Indians. During the 1900’s the town slowly developed into a vacation spot; McHenry was thought of as a resort town because of the Fox River. New residents were soon drawn to the area because of lumber, cigars, clay, food products and brewing; McHenry was becoming the perfect place for families to call home. Today, you can go to McHenry to enjoy one of the three downtown areas; which consists of Main Street, Green Street and Riverside Drive. McHenry also has many recreational activities, a downtown theatre and parks you can enjoy, including a dog park that is set to open summer of 2013. Some major industrial developments located in McHenry today are Medela, Follett Library Sources and Fabrik industries.
