Elgin is a town that has something to offer for everyone. The town of Elgin started in 1836 and has continued to grow culturally throughout the years. Elgin promotes diversity and also provides a choice for residents of either city or suburban living. In Elgin there is strong base of arts organizations and individual artists. Elgin is home to Elgin Academy, one of the oldest coeducational college preparatory schools as well as Elgin Community College, Judson University and Gail Borden Library, which has a location on the West side of Elgin. The town offers a wide variety of community events that appeal to residents as well as non-residents. The town offers a reading buddies program for children, a community garden, live performances at the Hemmens Cultural Center and the Elgin Art Showcase. For the golfing enthusiast Elgin offers Bowes Creek Country Club, Highlands Golf and Wing Park Golf. Some of the major employers in Elgin include school district U-46, which was established in 1837, Sherman Hospital and JP Morgan Chase.
