When DeKalb was first established in 1837, it started out as a small community, but once the Chicago and Northwestern Transportation Company arrived the town started to see growth within their community. During DeKalb's earlier years, the town was mainly a manufacturing and agriculture town, but over time has steadily grown into a town that is known as a university community with urban and rural roots. Dekalb is home Northern Illinois University, which is known for its business, nursing, education, engineering, and music programs. For residents and visitors, Dekalb offers a variety of things to do; from shopping and recreational activities to dining and local entertainment, there's something for everyone. Northern Illinois University serves as the city's largest employer along with Kishwaukee Health System and Wal-Mart Super Center.
